CPD ideas for nursing staff

In this blog, we shed light on the importance of CPD, as well as provide you with actionable insights and practical examples to foster your professional growth.

How many CPD hours do I have to complete?

You must undertake 35 hours of CPD relevant to your scope of practice in the three-year period since your registration was last renewed.

Of those 35 hours, at least 20 hours must include participatory learning, which involves interaction with one or more other professionals.

How do I record my CPD?

You must maintain accurate records of your CPD, including the method, description, dates, evidence etc. Use NMC’s useful template to log this information!

  • Attending a relevant training course: Taking a course that aligns with your profession or area of expertise can be incredibly beneficial. These courses may be online or in-person and cover a wide range of topics, from technical skills to soft skills like leadership and communication.

  • Going to a conference: Conferences are great platforms for networking, gaining insights into industry trends, and learning from experts. They often feature keynote speakers, workshops, and breakout sessions, providing a diverse range of learning opportunities.

  • Group meetings outside of everyday practice: Collaborating with peers and colleagues in a group setting can lead to valuable discussions and shared experiences. These meetings can be formal or informal, such as peer learning groups, mentoring, or professional associations.

  • Reading and reviewing publications: Staying up-to-date with industry publications, research papers, and relevant books is an excellent way to broaden your knowledge. Additionally, sharing your insights through reviews or writing articles can enhance your understanding and contribute to the community's knowledge.

  • Enquiry-based research: Conducting research, either as part of your job or independently, is a powerful CPD activity. It involves critical thinking, problem-solving, and the development of research skills. The process of formulating research questions, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions contributes significantly to your professional growth.

  • Participation in clinical audits: If you work in a healthcare or clinical setting, participating in audits is essential for improving patient care and ensuring quality standards. This process can enhance your understanding of best practices, data analysis, and compliance with industry regulations.
