Here at MCM Medical, we’re celebrating World Wellbeing Week! Carry on reading for our team’s top tips on prioritising self-care as a nurse.
1. Boost those endorphins!
Keeping active is a great way to boost your mental well-being - especially after a long shift! We know life as a nurse is busy and hours fluctuate from week to week, but you can still fit exercise into your daily routine if you plan it right. The first step is finding something you don’t find a chore, whether that be a dance class, Couch to 5K or YouTube yoga sessions. Once you find your favourite form of exercise, try and get at least 30 minutes in a day; even if that just means getting off the bus a few stops early to get your steps in on the way to work!
2. Eat well
Again, we know this is easier said than done - especially when you’re on night shifts and can barely remember your own name, let alone follow a complex recipe. However, there are resources out there to help you, including:
Sign up for a recipe box service such as HelloFresh or Gousto
Choose a day to prep your meals so they’re ready to go for the week ahead
Freeze leftovers!
3. Practice mindfulness
Learning to exist in the present moment is crucial to mitigating stress and looking after our mental health. As a nursing professional, it is common to be rushed off your feet and fully absorbed in looking after others. However, when you get the chance/space (e.g. during your coffee break/before going to bed etc.) try practising mindfulness as a way to reconnect with your surroundings and process your thoughts and feelings in a healthy way. Find out more about the benefits of mindfulness on the NHS website.
There we have it - three foolproof methods for looking after the mind, body and soul as a busy nurse!
